WORK DAY. Assigned 11/18 and 11/20 - Multiple Grades

The next two days are work days for you. You have multiple things to be working on over the next two classes. Here is the order of importance.

1. Opinion Story #1 - make sure this is a Google Doc, that it is shared properly (Anyone with the LINK can EDIT) and on your Google Site as a clickable link. This MUST BE DONE before Wednesday!! This is a MAJOR grade

2. Opinion Story #2 - make sure this is a Google Doc,  that it is shared properly and on your Google Site as a clickable link (Anyone with the LINK can EDIT). This MUST BE DONE before Wednesday!! This is a MAJOR grade. This story should also be linked correctly on the following Google Sheet:

Opinion Story #2

3. News/Club Story - make sure this is a Google Doc,  that it is shared properly and on your Google Site as a clickable link. This is a MAJOR grade. This story should also be linked correctly on the following Google Sheet:

News/Club Story

For the news story I expect you to have the following things completed for this assignment:

a. Source list - I need real names. You should have 3 people that you plan to interview, 2 should be students, 1 should be the sponsor.

b. Questions for all 3 sources.

c. At LEAST one interview completed and on the Doc.

d. The doc must be linked properly and on the sheet (linked above) correctly (Anyone with the LINK can EDIT).

If you have MORE done than this, you are ahead of things and that is a VERY good thing. If you are finished with both Opinion Stories, please keep working on this story. You can do interviews, and start the writing process.

4. Dispatch Issue #2

5. Dispatch Issue #1

6. CE #2.1

7. Make sure you are done with both Huntington AND Earthquake

Opinion Story #2 writing day. Assigned 11/15, due 11/18 - MAJOR

Now that you have your topic, let's spend all of today working on your Opinion Story #2. You can see your assignment here:

Journalism 1 Opinion Story #2, 24-25

Now let's get to work.

1. First make a new Google Doc and title it the name of your story.

2. Share the link, make sure it is set correctly: ANYONE WITH THE LINK CAN EDIT. Copy that link.

3. Paste it in the Google Sheet in the proper location. Make sure it is SHARED PROPERLY. And then go to your Google Site and make a new subpage called Opinion Story #2 and put it in there using the EMBED option to make it a clickable link.

4. Write a headline - let's say 5-10 words. It should be a complete sentence, but it shouldn't have a closing punctuation. Make sure it has a noun and verb. If you want to wait until the end to write this that is fine.

5. Outline your story in the following manner:

Paragraph 1 - a brief summary of the topic

Paragraph 2 - your direct stance on the topic

Paragraph 3 - an explanation of your stance

Paragraph 4 - one reason you think your stance is right

Paragraph 5 - another reason you think your stance is right

Paragraph 6 - a final reason you think your stance is right

OPTIONAL - paragraph 7 - another reason you think your stance is right

OPTIONAL - paragraph 8 - another reason you think your stance is right

Paragraph 7/8/9 - address the other side, either concede something that their side might have right OR pick out something that someone from that side might argue that you disagree with

Paragraph 8/9/10 - come up with a solution

OPTIONAL - paragraph 9/10/11 - another solution, or the continuation of the solution above

Paragraph 10/11/12 - restate your stance in different words than you used in paragraph 2

6. Your story should be between 375 - 475 words. Do not go over or be under that count.

7. Please turn this piece in using Times New Roman, size 12, regular - you may write in whatever font and size you want, but at the end, fix your entire piece to this standard

8. Please use indents and create a line break between paragraphs, you should have 8-12 paragraphs total

9. You may need to do some research about your topic, and you are welcome to use information you gather from your research. Make sure you CITE those sources if you use their information or words. For example you might find statistics that relate to your story. You must cite who collected those stats. This can be very simple: According to a study by researchers at Stanford University, 85% of students who get 10 hours of sleep have higher grades than those who don't.

10. There should be NO QUOTES in your story. This may mean that when you cite other sources you will need to convert that into a statement without quotation marks.

11. You may write in 1st person, but you can also write these in 2nd or even 3rd person.

12. Avoid repeating yourself. Your reasoning needs to be distinct and different in each paragraph.

13. Do not veer from your stance. Be firm and definitive. Give your opinion, defend your opinion with your reasoning, and come up with solutions to the problem.

14. You have all of this class to write, and you need to be done by the end of next class, but next week is also dedicated to News/Club stories.....so balance your time.

Opinion Story #2 selections - catch up day - assigned 11/13 - NO GRADE ASSIGNED TODAY

The first thing we want to do today is make your top-5 choices for your second opinion story. First, take a look at these options, there are 28 of them and there are 18 of you, so there are a few extra:

1. Hall monitors - does Bowie have enough? Do they even help? Take a stance on this topic.
2. Double FIT - would it be good to have another FIY-type class between 3rd and 4th period? Argue yes or no on this topic.
3. Girls sports - it doesn't feel like there is much equality between the sports here at Bowie. Take a stance on this topic.
4. Passing Periods - are they long enough? If they were longer, it would mean the school day would also be longer. Do you want classes to start at 8:30 or go until 4:50 to have longer passing periods? Write about passing periods and make an argument either way.
5. Getting away from Block scheduling and going back to shorter classes - some people think this would be good for students. What do you think? Take a stance either way and explain why.
6. Do standardized tests really matter? Argue for or against standardize tests. One thing to think about; how do you want college's to judge you? A single application with your essay and letters or recommendation OR could high scores on standardized tests help schools decide who to should get in?
7. Paying for college - Can you think of ways that could reduce the cost of college? If so, argue that those should be established so more people can go to college. Be realistic....
8. Not enough elective options - Does Bowie have enough elective options? Take a stance either way? Something to think about: Do you know all of the elective options here?
9. Holiday decoration timing - is it too early to see Xmas decorations the day after Halloween? Argue yes or no.
10. Food delivery at school - Bowie should allow food delivery, or Bowie should not allow food delivery. Take a side and explain why you think you are right?
11. Social Media impact on Bowie - Is SM a big influence on students here at Bowie. Is that a good thing or not?
12. Overworking students - students are overworked at Bowie. What are some solutions to this problem?
13. Racism at Bowie - is there a racism problem at Bowie? Pick a side and argue your opinions.
14. AI in school - schools should allow students to use AI OR is AI bad and schools should be even stricter about its use. Argue one side or the other.
15. "Brain rot" - Write about the use of language and how it has changed over time. Take the stance that each generation has its own language and that is okay OR by creating new languages we are dumbing down the English language.
16. Burnout - what are some solutions to burnout and what kind of suggestions could you make to students who are feeling burnout.
17. Pumpkin trend - good or bad when students start following SM trends?
18. Banned books - banning books is bad OR there are some books that might be inappropriate for students and those shouldn't be in the school library (you could argue in this case, that maybe at the public library).
19. Political issues dividing students and teachers - does this happen in school? How do you propose that teachers stay politically neutral while trying to do their jobs.
20. Relationships vs Grades - should students focus on grades over relationships, or is there a way to balance them and still be successful. Pick one and make a good argument for your opinion.
21. Are core classes preparing students for college? Take a side, yes or no?
22. Homework - should there be homework in school or not? Things to think about: do you think you will have homework in college? How dos one prepare for post-secondary education if you aren't learning how to do homework now? Do you think all education should be done completely in the classroom?
23. Louder classes: some classes are really loud and that can impact students. What are some potential solutions to this kind of problem (this could be about other things like AC/heat, odors, or lighting or other classroom specific issues besides noise).
24. Not enough resources to help when struggling with school work - Bowie doesn't offer enough resources to help students who are struggling. Things to think about: Do you know all of the potential areas to get help, like peer tutoring? Are you taking advantage of FIT and getting help? Are you going to tutoring?
25. All students should be able to leave campus at lunch to get food - Argue why you agree with this.
26. Jobs as a teenager - should students get jobs or not? Take a stance and argue one way or the other.
27. Vandalism is a problem at Bowie. Come up with some potential solutions and argue why they would help.
28. Bees are going extinct and that could be bad news for the world. Come up with some solutions and argue why we should make those changes mandatory.

Pick out 5 of these that you find interesting. Then click here: Opinion story #2 Choices

To the right of your name, type the story number and a few words that describe your story selection for your 5 favorites. Later this period, you will get your assignment and will start writing today and through next class.

IF you have another idea that you would prefer to write about, come see me. I am open to shifting you to something else as long as I can find a local connection and I feel like it is a worthy story idea.

When you are done with this assignment, move on to one of the following things:

1. CE#2.1 - finish
2. Opinion Story #1 - if I don't have it as PND, you aren't done
3. Dispatch Issue #2 - make sure you got it done
4. Dispatch Issue #1 - I have it marked as PND - make sure you are done
5. Check Frontline and verify that you are caught up - some of you need to finish Huntington and Earthquake (many of you only did one of them)

You may also go interview - you MUST tell me who you are interviewing and I need to look up their information for you.

I will assign your Opinion Story #2 today. here is the information for that piece - you will have time today and on Friday to write this piece. Next week we will focus on your News/Club story, but there will be time to work on Opinion Story #2 then as well.

Today you will start writing your second opinion story. Last time, you choose from a small group of options for your first attempt. This time, almost all of you have your own story. No one else will write the same piece. We will publish some of the ones you wrote before, and all of these will be published if they meet our standards. This is due by the end of class on Monday, Nov. 18!!

C.E. #2.1 AND Opinion Story #2 Brainstorm. Assigned 11/11, due 11/13 - CE and Minor

On your Google Site, please make a new subpage and title it: Current Events Quiz #2.1. Answer the question below on that page. You are welcome to make multiple text boxes if that is easier, or if you want to work on just one text box, that is great. Whatever is best for you. Please be aware that if you copy and past the questions to your Google Site, it can create some formatting problems. I DO NOT NEED you to include the questions - just the answers.

IF ANY OF THESE LINKS DO NOT WORK, JUST TELL ME THAT IN YOUR ANSWER. I KNOW I AM NOT THERE AND I NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL WORK AND WHAT WON'T WITHOUT BEING THERE WITH YOU. I WILL NOT PENALIZE YOU FOR THOSE QUESTIONS THAT YOU CANNOT ANSWER.

Here is today's!!

1. What is a provision ballot?

2. According to the article, what is one possible reason Donald Trump is now supporting crypto currency?

3. Who is the new Gladiator (the actors name)?

4. What are the Northern Taurids?

Long Response:

Please read the following story and respond to the questions below. Please answer the question fully and always try to answer WHY. This section is the subjective section and I will penalize you if you write one word or short phrases for answers with an open-ended question.

Answer the following questions:

A. What is COP29?

B. What are some of the potential solutions to climate change according the article?

C. How does the election of Donald Trump change the climate change situation, according to the article?

D. How does the Paris Agreement have to do with Donald Trump?

E. Do you think climate change is a problem? Explain your answer.

F. What do you think the solution to climate change is? Explain your answer.

REMINDER - A single sentence isn't enough. I expect you to expand upon your writing. If you think you have written enough, you haven't, write more. Be sure to answer WHY you think something

Brainstorm

Our next writing assignments will be for the opinions section of the newspaper.

Because of our renewed effort to publish your work on thedispatchonline.net I want you to pick your topics for this assignment. But there are some guidelines we have to follow.

First, you cannot pick something that we just aren't going to convince someone to believe in. For example, the death penalty - people are either for it or against it....pretty much across the board. Other examples include abortion, immigration, drug use, etc. Now there are certain parts of some of those examples that might work.

Second, we need to LOCALIZE every opinion piece. That means we need to make sure every story idea is of interest to Bowie students, explains the subject in a way they will understand, and that we try to relate it to something local or near us. Be very specific and pick a topic that is local or can have a local slant or angle to the writing.

That is how you pick a story that is localized, impactful, and has two sides to it.

In my newspaper class, I often have my students answer some questions to help them create ideas. On your Google Site make a new subpage titled Opinion story #2 Brainstorm, take 15-20 minutes to answer the following questions and lets see if you can come up with some ideas:

1. List three emotions you've experienced the past week. What triggered them?
2. List three things or situations that have given you a sense of satisfaction or accomplishment.
3. List three things you worry about.
4. List three things that frustrate you.
5. List three things you need.
6. List three things you think teachers worry about.
7. List three things you think give teachers a sense of satisfaction or accomplishment.
8. List three things you like about your school/community.
9. List three things you dislike about your school/community.
10. Identify and briefly describe one TREND you have noticed around school, in the media, in pop culture, in your community.

Now, just like last class, please use the information you created above, combined with what you did last class to come up with THREE new story ideas. Please write at least a sentence to help me understand what you want from this story. Hopefully what you wrote above, will help you. Next class you will get a list of these story ideas and everyone will be assigned a new opinion story to write. You may not use the following ideas:

Incentives
Bathrooms
ID's
FIT
See something, say something
Cell Phones
School Threats
Presidential Election

11. Think of THREE new story ideas and type them into your Google Site. You MAY use some of your ideas from last time we did a brainstorm, just make sure to flesh them out a little bit.

When you are finished with this task, you have the rest of the period to write your Opinion Story #1, make sure your Google Doc is shared properly (so anyone with the LINK CAN EDIT), and make sure it is linked on your Google Site on a new subpage called Opinion Story #1.

Monday, November 4, 2024

Dispatch Issue 2. Assigned 11/6, due 11/11 - Minor

The Dispatch Issue #2

Last class I indicated that you would be doing a brainstorm today, but I decide to wait until I return so we can work on that together. So, make sure you are done with Opinion Story #1. Make sure you have created a Google Doc and shared it as a CLICKABLE link on your Google Site. Make sure it is SHARED PROPERLY, so that ANYONE with the LINK can EDIT!!

Then move on to this assignment. You are going to spend the entire period reading the 2nd issue of the Dispatch. I will pass out copies of the paper shortly. You will need your own copy. You are welcome to take it home if you would like.

Please read one story from each of the following SIX sections:

1. News or the Politics page
2. Features
3. Entertainment or Reviews or the Photo Essay (pg 6 or 16)
4. Sports
5. Commentary
6. And you must read either the In-Depth story on page 8-9 (I voted) or 7 (Behind the ballot)

As you read the stories I want you to answer the following questions for EACH story on your Google Site on a new subpage called Dispatch Issue #1:

1. Write a two sentence summary of the story.

2. Answer the following questions for each story:

Who was quoted in the story?
What quote was the strongest in your opinion?
Did the lead paragraph make you want to keep reading?
Was the conclusion a quote or a statement?

3. Now make a new text box on the same subpage (Dispatch Issue #1) and answer the following questions:

Which story made you want to learn more about the topic?
Which story was the best written?
Which story had the best quotes (overall)?
Which story was the most boring of the ones you read?
Which one was the hardest to follow (meaning maybe wasn't written as well)?

4. Then I want you to do a couple of things with the photography. In a new text box, answer the following questions:A. What is your favorite photo in the entire paper?A1. Why is this your favorite?B. What is your least favorite photo in the entire paper?B1. Why is this your least favorite?C. If you were a photographer on staff, which event/photo assignment would you have liked to do for this issue? You will need to look through the entire paper and see the topics covered and decide which one you think would have been fun.D. Overall, how would you rate the photography in this issue (1-10 scale, 1 being terrible, 10 being the best set of photos you have ever seen)? What were the strong points and weak points of the images as a whole?5. LAST TASK - The newspaper staff just completed a brainstorm activity for the second issue of the year which will come out in late December. I consider my Journalism 1 students part of staff, so I want to hear from you. Please list 3 to 5 story ideas you think would be interesting to read about in the school newspaper. Try to think of things that impact students, or has some sort of local connection. If you propose an idea for something broader than that, please give me some sort of story "angle" that could be "localized" to Bowie. Every story in the school newspaper should have some sort of impact on students at the school.
